Charles Kelley

Charles Kelley, a well-known architect within the international urban design and Smart City planning communities, has been recognized for his role in high-performance planning and community-oriented sustainable development. With over 35 years of experience, Charles fosters an interdisciplinary approach to design that blends community aspirations with natural and financial resources to reach balanced architecture solutions for developers, institutions, and municipalities. His work has facilitated urban renewal and economic development in districts and neighborhoods, including the Pearl District in Portland; the SW Ecodistrict in Washington, D.C.; and the Kashiwanoha ecodistrict in Japan. Charles has worked on transportation, environmental design, healthcare, and mixed-use development projects, and his clients include TriMet, the National Capital Planning Commission, Seattle Children’s Hospital, Providence Health & Services, Mitsui Fudosan, and the City of Portland. Charles is a founding member of the City of Portland’s % for Green, as well as the urban planning firm EcoDistricts, and is a lead planner for We Build Green Cities. He has spoken at GreenBuild, the American Planning Association, and the Urban Land Institute about mobility, stormwater management, and sustainable communities. Charles received a Bachelor of Arts in Architecture from the University of Washington and a Master of Architecture and Urban Design Certificate from the University of Pennsylvania.
