Doss Mabe's sensibilities as an architect and urban designer have been shaped by his early decision to study and teach social anthropology for a decade. He joined ZGF in 1988, helping to establish the California office, and has served as Design Partner in the Los Angeles and New York offices. He has been called upon to design and implement programs that bring together very diverse groups of stakeholders and end users in order to facilitate consensus on a shared vision and to work together to produce a project that is mutually acceptable. Doss creates architecture in its context—physical, social, and cultural. His commitment to community-based design has been visible in his leadership of such major public projects as Exposition Park's revitalization (a national AIA Honor Award recipient) and the California Science Center in the heart of South Central Los Angeles. Doss has also been instrumental in planning and designing healthcare projects for clients, including Cedars-Sinai, City of Hope, Children's Hospital Los Angeles, and the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago, as well as academic and research facilities for Cornell University, Princeton University, The University of Texas, The University of Arizona, The University of Chicago, the University of Southern California, and the University of California. Prior to entering private practice, Doss taught at Yale University, the University of Redlands, and Rice University, and more recently, at the University of Southern California. Doss received a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Architecture from Rice University, a Master of Architecture in Urban Design from Harvard University, and a Master of Philosophy in Social Anthropology from Yale University.
