The new 115,000 SF Clif Bar headquarters in Emeryville, CA was designed to reflect its eco-friendly and health-based company culture. In 2001 Clif Bar pledged that by 2015 it would have reduced the amount of landfill waste it created every year by 90% with initiatives that reuse, recycle, and compost. ZGF followed suit to design a sustainable and energy-effiecient building supporting the company’s green values. Reuse and recycling were primary drivers of the project design and the team worked diligently to incorporate reclaimed elements into the project. The floor in the yoga and dance studio is reused. The pizza oven in the café is secondhand and so too is the climbing wall (reconstructed from two existing walls). Lamps, tables, white boards, book shelves etc. are reused from a former EmeryTech tenant. New furniture in the space has a high content of recycled and rapidly renewable bamboo. Recycled denim was used to make 380 sound-absorbing panels. R&D kitchen and employee café use energy-efficient appliances, including walk-in refrigerators; office uses Energy Star electronic equipment; one of first buildings in the state to meet the new California Building Energy Efficiency Standards. The eco-friendly environment along with generous health and wellness benefits establishes Clif Bar spot among the top workplaces in America.
