ZGF has been honored by the American Institute of Architects with an Urban Design Award for Merit for the Glendale Downtown Specific Plan & Mobility Study. The award honors achievements that involve the expanding role of the architect in urban design, city planning, and community development. ZGF served as the urban designer for the City of Glendale’s Downtown Specific Plan, which establishes regulations and guidelines to promote mixed-use, transit- and pedestrian-oriented development within the office and commercial core of the city. The plan establishes design parameters and land-use regulations, and directs economic development, streetscape improvements, transportation development, parking, pedestrian amenities, open space, preservation of cultural resources, and integration of public art. It also includes a comprehensive Mobility Study that outlines an implementation plan of various programs to help reduce auto usage. Together, these documents establish a coherent and consistent regulatory framework of guidelines, standards, and programs to ensure the long-term health of the city as a vital mixed-use center in the region.
