On Tuesday, October 3, during New York’s Archtober 2017 festivities, ZGF brought the heat in the second annual Great Architectural Bake Off at the Center for Architecture. Our team of six amateur incredible pastry chefs was among the 10 architecture and design firms invited by event organizers WATG and Wimbley Interiors to recreate the world’s most iconic buildings out of cake. Judges were on the lookout for building recognizability, creativity, and of course, deliciousness—this year’s panel featured New York magazine’s Emily Sundberg, esteemed architecture writer and critic Fred Bernstein, Dwell magazine’s Allie Weiss, founder of SOFTlab Michael Szivos, and renowned pastry chefs Michael Laiskonis and Raiza Costa.
Our masterpiece and crowd favorite, The Solomon R. Cakennheim Museum, featured base layers of vanilla pound cake, while the iconic main atrium and its diminutive companion were fashioned from funfetti cake (the sprinkles symbolizing the priceless artwork housed within). A healthy coating of latte flavored frosting (because New York’s blood type is caffeine) went on before it was all shrouded in a handmade marshmallow fondant, and topped off with signage lettering cast from rich chocolate. #yum
