ZGF designed the new, 24,705 SF integrated cancer treatment center for the St. Charles Health System to be patient- and family-focused, with everything located under one roof—oncology, radiology, and complementary therapies. The two-story center houses a 16,000 SF medical oncology wing and an 8,705 SF radiation oncology wing that was renovated as part of this project. Upon arrival, visitors enter a full-height lobby, containing the registration desk, which provides a welcoming and tranquil setting. Large windows allow abundant natural light to illuminate the airy interior, which is finished in a warm, neutral palette accented by natural wood. A peripheral corridor surrounds the building at ground level, with large windows on the exterior side and a series of doors to private interview / examination rooms on the interior. These rooms enclose an inner, functional back-of-house core comprise staff offices and shared spaces, allowing individuals to work and interact without disturbing patients or visitors. Each room has two doors, enabling patient access from the peripheral corridor and staff access from the central work area. The second level contains the infusion / treatment areas, as well as a multi-function conference room, additional private offices, and utility spaces. The main infusion room has floor-to-ceiling windows that allow abundant natural light to illuminate the interior, while providing views of the surrounding landscape and distant mountains. A private, outdoor deck runs along the two exterior sides of the infusion room, and overlooks a healing garden below.
