Camilla Watson, associate principal and interior designer who has been with ZGF’s Seattle office for eight years, speaks about the importance of diversity for the future of design as a tool to drive innovation.

Architecture is a reflection of culture and values. Where and how we practice reflects our commitment to community-building and sustainability. Every generation, a small, privileged group helps shape the built world we collectively live in. Historically, that group has always been white and male. The future of our profession needs to demonstrate that there is no limit to what a designer can look like. We all bring unique perspective to our work, shaped by the things that make us special—our education, place of birth, and cultural heritage, just to start. It is critical that we continue to amplify the voices and talents of Black designers to make sure the profession continues to advance and innovate.
