Law Firms Look to the Future

Law Firms Look to the Future

Stoel Rives LLP, Portland HQ

Workplace

After 45 years in the same building, Stoel Rives was ready to expand its office and chose Portland’s Park Avenue West tower for its new home. ZGF partnered with the law firm to identify and achieve a vision for a more open and transparent space that was sustainable, would attract and retain talent, and paid homage to the firm’s Northwest roots.

The design of the new nine-floor office, like the firm itself, looks to the future. In contrast to Stoel Rives’ dark and enclosed former space, the Park Avenue West headquarters is warm, bright, and collaborative. The five floors of attorney workspace include interconnecting stairs to increase casual interaction and an attorney collaboration lounge on each floor. Windowless offices gave way to glass-enclosed workspaces, reflecting Stoel Rives’ culture of transparency and maximizing natural daylight in the building. The remaining four floors are occupied by a two-floor reception and conference center and two floors of open-plan administrative services.

A company with deep roots in the Northwest, Stoel Rives was also dedicated to creating a sustainable workplace with connections to its history and surroundings. Reclaimed Oregon Oak floors and Douglass fir walls pay tribute to the firm’s original client base of timber companies and create a warm, welcoming feel for visitors; the two-story reception and conference center offers dramatic views of the city, river, and mountains beyond; and the reception walls include space to showcase the firm’s extensive art collection, the product of a long history of supporting Northwest artists. The project has achieved LEED Platinum® for Commercial Interiors and four Green Globes for Sustainable Interiors, the highest possible rating.
