ZGF completed a comprehensive long-term plan for The Evergreen State College to guide development and identify strategies to meet the college’s goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2020. This public liberal arts and sciences college located on 1,000 acres in Olympia is committed to raising ecological consciousness and using the campus as a laboratory for sustainability related to land-use planning, operations, curriculum, and quality of life. The overall objective of the master plan was to translate strategic goals into a physical plan that identified where the College should be focusing its resources to meet future demands on its facilities and land resources. At the heart of the process was a focus on meeting expressed sustainable design goals, including the incorporation of green commuting, green / alternate energy, increased on-campus population, off-campus learning centers, reuse and recycling, on-site storm and wastewater management, and resource stewardship.
