Children’s Hospital Colorado, East Tower Addition

Healthcare

Following the completion of Children’s Hospital Colorado, ZGF, in association with H+L Architecture, was asked to design the East Tower addition to accommodate both program growth and the development of models of care. The new 165-bed, 360,443 SF addition is immediately adjacent to the original hospital and includes a PICU, maternal and fetal medicine, as well as medical-surgical and rehabilitation facilities. More than 120,000 SF of shelled space was also provided to accommodate future clinics, medical-surgical beds, and a procedure center. The project involved the renovation of 89,985 SF in the existing hospital to expand the NICU, emergency department, radiology, pharmacy, and laboratory space while relocating additional hospital departments and services to the East Tower. The Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders was expanded by 24 inpatient beds that house immuno-compromised BMT and high-risk oncology patients, and a room for I-131 MiG treatments. The new building includes a floor devoted to high risk deliveries, with a large fetal intervention suite to hold interdisciplinary teams, as well as additional amenity spaces for families outside of the patient rooms. The East Tower also contains a new chemo prep pharmacy with cleanroom, and specimen processing and additional team workspace. Future plans involve the renovation of the infusion and examination area to accommodate a greater number of procedures, as well as multidisciplinary teams and higher acuity infusion patients.
