SMART HOSPITAL AND BC CANCER CENTRE IN SURREY

SMART HOSPITAL AND BC CANCER CENTRE IN SURREY

Fraser Health, New Surrey Hospital and BC Cancer Centre

Healthcare

A first of its kind in British Columbia, the new all-electric Surrey hospital and BC Cancer Centre will deliver healthcare closer to home for the province’s fastest-growing city. Designed in joint venture by ZGF and Parkin Architects, working with EllisDon as general contractor, the project represents significant investment in acute care south of the Fraser River, particularly in the Lower Mainland neighbourhoods of Cloverdale, Newton, and South Surrey, where roughly half of the city’s population resides.

Digitally equipped with the latest tools and technologies, this community asset will seamlessly integrate into Fraser Health’s regional smart system of care, serving thousands of additional patients each year and better supporting care teams and staff. These innovations will enhance the patient journey from pre-admission to discharge, both inside the hospital and through expanded virtual health services.

With special focus on general medicine and short-stay surgeries—the areas of greatest projected demand—the project will address the most pressing healthcare needs of the community while setting the table for future growth. The new community hospital will provide 168 acuity-adaptable inpatient beds, an emergency department with 55 treatment spaces, a surgical/perioperative suite with five smart operating rooms, four procedure rooms, and extensive new diagnostic equipment and capacity. The connected BC Cancer Centre will be one of the largest in the province and the first fully integrated within a community hospital, adding 50 oncology/ambulatory care rooms, 54 chemotherapy treatment spaces, and room for six linear accelerators for radiation therapy.

Targeting LEED Gold

Increased clinical capacity and access to virtual care services will empower many patients to receive more care from the comfort of their home and improve communication between patients and providers.

Easily accessible from Highway 10, the site is envisioned as a future healthcare innovation hub. A dedicated onsite central energy facility is integral to its long-term resilience and critical facility strategies.

Future-Forward Care

As a next-generation facility within Fraser Health, the new hospital and BC Cancer Centre will embed digital and virtual health innovations such as virtual intake, remote patient monitoring, virtual pre/post-operative care, emergency department follow-ups, and outpatient clinics to support rehabilitation and recovery. A range of specialized services will empower patients to receive more care from the comfort of their home. When they do need to come into the hospital, virtual health will guide them to the right care setting, improving outcomes, safety, and regional capacity.

The hospital’s thoughtful planning and design will reflect the needs and values of a diverse multigenerational and multicultural community.

Bright, daylit spaces foster a healthy environment connecting patients, families, and staff to the outdoors.

Adding to BC’s complete care network, the new hospital and cancer centre will complement rather than duplicate services at nearby hospitals such as Surrey Memorial Hospital, the Jim Pattison Outpatient Care and Surgery Centre, and the existing BC Cancer Centre, along with other nearby facilities at Langley Memorial Hospital and Peace Arch Hospital.

Focusing on high-growth areas like short-stay surgeries, the project will create capacity for timely access to care while freeing up space and resources at regional hospitals like Surrey Memorial to focus on higher-acuity needs. The new Emergency Department will annually channel tens of thousands of visits away from Surrey Memorial’s—the busiest in BC.

A dedicated Emergency Department entrance separates the flow of patients and families from the rest of the hosptial and BC Cancer Centre.

Expanded cancer care services will decrease wait times for oncologist appointments and radiation therapy, supporting 105,000 oncology ambulatory care visits and 72,000 cancer treatment-related visits annually.

BC Cancer Centre will cultivate a hub of clinical and academic excellence to attract top talent to the area.

Environmental Stewardship

Sustainability and advancing a low-carbon health system is a priority for Fraser Health. The fully electric, climate-resilient hospital and BC Cancer Centre will meet or exceed LEED Gold standards, helping reduce its environmental footprint and supporting community health for generations to come.
