NBC’s Seattle affiliate KING 5 TV recently interviewed ZGF principal Taka Soga about a robotic parking garage system planned for Seattle Cancer Care Alliance’s upcoming expansion in the South Lake Union neighborhood.

The robotic system is the first of its kind for any medical center in the Puget Sound region and the first of its size and scale on the West Coast, according to the project’s general contractor, GLY.

The system will operate autonomously, loading and stacking cars vertically and horizontally until they reach their designated spaces. This means there’s no need for ramps or tall floor-to-ceiling heights, curbing excavation costs and maximizing space in a constrained urban footprint. In the future, the system can disassembled and repurposed for a new use, enabling SCCA to futureproof its investment should driving habits change.

When the project is completed, patients will simply drop off their vehicles with a valet, who then will take the cars to one of the garage’s robotic lifts and platforms. The garage will give patients and families one less thing to worry about—navigating through cramped parking garages—so they can focus on getting to their appointment.
