We All Need Rainbows: An Educational Comic About Cincinnati Children’s Spectral Lighting System

Research and Tools November 10, 2023

ZGF and Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center developed and illustrated an original comic book to educate families and staff about the novel spectral lighting system in the hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Because the spectral lighting system is a first of its kind, we needed an engaging and easily accessible way to explain how it works, its health benefits, and the science behind it. The goal of the comic is to make the science fun, easy for families and staff to understand, and supportive of the onboarding process for clinical trials. From physics to eye biology to lighting design, the comic breaks down why light is important to human health and how the NICU patient rooms at Cincinnati Children’s are programmed to optimize the lighting environment for babies’ growth and development. Follow along with Prism, our narrator guide!
