ZGF to Design Washington State University’s New Integrated Sciences Building

News October 28, 2025

Washington State University (WSU) has selected ZGF and Hoffman Construction as the progressive design-build team for its new Integrated Sciences Building in Pullman, Washington. This transformative project is a key initiative of the university’s strategy to expand access to modern STEM education, increase equity in science fields, and strengthen WSU’s leadership as a land grant university.

The Integrated Sciences Building will be the new cornerstone of WSU’s Science Corridor, bringing together three floors of state-of-the-art chemistry labs and a student-centered floor designed to provide the hands-on, team-based learning that today’s STEM careers demand. It replaces Heald Hall, which opened in 1962 and has long anchored the Science Corridor but no longer meets the needs of students and faculty and requires demolition.

To meet rising economic challenges, WSU needed a team that could do more than design and build this new facility—they needed a partner that could plan for phased funding, safely demolish and stabilize the site in the interim, and create contingency pathways to ensure the project’s success. ZGF and Hoffman’s 40-year collaboration and dozens of joint projects demonstrated the trust and track record WSU was looking for.

“We’re thrilled to support WSU and the College of Arts & Sciences in their mission and vision for the Integrated Sciences Building, which will help enrich and inspire the next generation of students and faculty.”
- Sara Howell, Principal, ZGF

While the exact size and configuration of the building is yet to be determined, the progressive design-build team will help WSU explore what best serves the site and surrounding corridor. Construction completion is expected in 2029.
