News October 13, 2025

ZGF and McClain + Yu Architecture & Design have been selected to design a new state-of-the-art facility for The University of New Mexico (UNM) School of Medicine. Projected to double the School’s enrollment over the next decade, the facility will help expand New Mexico’s health care workforce of the future and address the demand for more providers across the region.

The School of Medicine represents an exciting new resource for The University of New Mexico to build on its world-class medical education. Not only will it enable medical programs to grow their graduating classes, but it promises to be a community-oriented facility that prepares students for today’s team-based, interprofessional health care delivery models.

The new School will anchor the growing campus and enable institutional convergence. Bringing research and education together, the building will reflect UNM’s mission of innovation, empathy, and community impact—establishing a lasting symbol for health care in the state.

ZGF | McClain + Yu, A Joint Venture were selected for a holistic, integrated approach to this complex academic medical project. The team’s experience reflected a deep understanding of the School of Medicine’s educational, research, and clinical missions—uniting program, cost, schedule, and campus context into a clear and achievable vision.

Concept design for the new University of New Mexico School of Medicine is underway, with final design to be revealed in late 2026 or early 2027.
