In this latest series of Humans of ZGF interviews, we sat down with the model shop team to learn about their unique career paths into model building, the most memorable projects they’ve worked on, and what’s on their bench right now.

Patrick Burgess is a model builder in our Portland model shop who has spent the last 12 years in manufacturing and fabrication. An expert in Computer Numerical Control (CNC), Patrick’s ability to blend technical know-how with skilled craftsmanship has enabled him to construct cutting-edge custom products. Building on his past experiences, he’s now responsible for larger fabrication projects at ZGF, where he works with clients to turn their unique visions into reality. Learn more about Patrick below.

One day he’s in the ZGF model shop, covered in shavings from a recent build; the next he’s out in nature with his 2-year-old son.

Why do you love working in architecture and design? I love working on projects that can have a lasting, positive effect on a community.

How did you make your way into the model shop at ZGF? All my work experience has been in manufacturing of some sort. It began in special effects and industrial design, then retail design and architectural casework and millwork. ZGF seemed like the right fit to combine many of the skills I have picked up over the years.

What is the coolest project you’ve worked on? The Eisai Founder’s Wall. It was a 20-foot-long S-curve base with SEG graphics mounted on top. The whole base was made from a plywood core clad in thermoformed solid surface. This project also includes what we call the “Map Wall.” This 6x16 foot world map features every country where Eisai has facilities, labs, manufacturing plants, corporate offices, etc.

Patrick flew out to New Jersey to help with the installation of the Founder Wall at Eisai Pharmaceutical’s regional headquarters.

What’s on your bench right now? I’m currently working on the large map wall display for Eisai Pharmaceuticals. This entails cutting every country in the world out of both solid surface and recycled PET acoustic panel board and indicating specific locations where Eisai operates.

What are your hobbies outside of work? A few years ago, I would have said playing basketball or planning a hike or backpacking trip. Since COVID, I have become more “indoorsy.” I am currently enrolled at Portland State, so I spend a lot of my free time studying, reading and writing.

Dogs or cats? I have two cats, Finn and Grandma. I think I prefer dogs.

Favorite quote? “I’m not superstitious, but I’m a little stitious.” – Michael Scott, The Office

Favorite TV/movie character? Any character Danny DeVito plays.
