ZGF to Design New Aspen/Pitkin County Airport
ZGF has been selected to design a new terminal for the Aspen/Pitkin County Airport (ASE). As the gateway to Aspen’s breathtaking beauty and world-class skiing, the new terminal promises a resource-efficient design to honor the region and elevate the traveler experience.
“We are thrilled to partner with Pitkin County and the community to deliver a new terminal that meets the highest aspirations for performance and passenger experience, and that engages community stakeholders every step of the way,” said Sharron van der Meulen, ZGF Managing Partner. “This won’t be just another terminal—it will be an iconic gateway that’s distinctly Aspen.”
ZGF, in partnership with Charles Cunniffe Architects, was awarded the terminal design based on ZGF’s award-winning aviation design, climate leadership, and deep experience delivering complex, community-centered infrastructure. The firm’s portfolio includes one of the most energy-efficient buildings in North America, the Rocky Mountain Institute Innovation Center in Basalt, Colorado, and the beloved Portland International Airport main terminal.
The new terminal will replace an existing, aging terminal with a new structure that will better serve Aspen, Pitkin County, and neighboring communities for future generations – all while maintaining operations during construction. The project aims to set benchmarks for improving passenger health and wellness, bringing to life the core values outlined in the community-driven Common Ground Recommendations, including energy-efficiency, warmth, and operational excellence.
Concept design for the new terminal is now underway.
