ZGF to Design New Ann & Robert Lurie Children’s Hospital
One of the nation’s top children’s hospitals, Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital, has selected the Design-Build team of Clayco & Skender JV with ZGF and Lamar Johnson Collaborative to plan, program, and design a new pediatric hospital and outpatient clinic.
The new 270,000 SF hospital and outpatient clinic will be located west of Chicago in Downers Grove, Illinois. This will be Lurie Children’s first inpatient hospital outside of their main facility in Chicago’s Streeterville neighborhood, which was designed by ZGF in 2012 and has become one of the premier pediatric centers in the country.
The new facility represents a milestone in Lurie Children’s growth and will be designed to meet the needs of an expanding population of families beyond Chicago. According to Lurie Children’s, currently nearly half of children in Chicago’s western suburbs must travel outside their community to receive inpatient pediatric care.
“We are honored to continue our partnership with Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital and support the next evolution of their mission to deliver exceptional pediatric care to the greater Chicago area,” said ZGF Partner Victoria Nichols. “Designed to expand access to care, improve patient outcomes, and deliver consistent excellence, the new hospital campus will offer a comfortable and compassionate healing environment for Downers Grove families.”
Planning for the new pediatric hospital is currently underway and is subject to regulatory approval. Intended programming includes a pediatric emergency department, surgery suites, inpatient beds and key pediatric subspecialties such as oncology, cardiology, gastroenterology and orthopedics, among others.
