An Airport That Reflects the Northwest

Terminal Expansion North - Port of Portland, Portland International Airport

In the 1990s, ZGF was tasked with the Terminal Expansion North, a project which expanded Portland International Airport, increasing its footprint to accommodate new concourses for Delta Air Lines and United Airlines, with a new main lobby to connect the two. The expansion featured large, skylit sections of concourse and hold rooms, ticket counters, new concessions, customs and immigrations, a new baggage claim area, and other support facilities, including 20,000 square feet of office space for Port staff.

The expansion continues the airport's passenger-friendly scale, clear circulation patters, and strong sense of place; it also established a framework for PDX that has enabled the airport to maintain clarity as it continues to evolve.

The new Concourse E was designed to accomodate six gates along with concessions.

The project also rebuilt Concourse D, replacing the existing nine gates and connecting to the earlier D Extension project.

DESIGN APPROACH

The project was designed to extend an existing facility that was passenger friendly with a strong sense of place that reflected the Northwest. The new facilities included skylights and other glazing to allow natural light to extend to most of the public spaces. Concourse E has a sloped roof shape with open trusses and skylights above. The Concourse Lobby has a clear span of over 170 feet with a network of skylights and a dramatic north curtain wall that highlights a view of the airport’s north runway and the river beyond. Concourse D will continue the skylit circulation spaces from the new Concourse Lobby to the existing international concourse.

Trees and other touches of biophilia were added throughout, enhancing the human experience.

The roof slope and plan of the concourse lobby is directional for way-finding and light-filled for clarity.
