A programmable AV wall at the reception desk allows Shape to showcase its latest work as the company continues to evolve.
Opposite reception, the top floor houses Shape’s executive offices and meeting rooms with Space Needle views that celebrate the company’s urban roots.
A large flex-assembly space can be reconfigured from lunch mode to all-hands meetings in minutes.
Playful pendant lighting carries through from reception.
Custom wood features in common areas add warmth and contrast the industrial character of the building.
CONNECTING PEOPLE + SCIENCE
Prioritizing “science first” as a guiding principle, the flexible yet functional layout emphasizes connection between the lab and office program. Multiple access points and full height interior glazing celebrate the bright, open work environment while showcasing the latest science happening in the labs.
Labs and office spaces intermingle for seamless workflows and enhanced collaboration.
Conference rooms of various sizes allow more focused work, with graphic nods to science embedded in the decorative privacy film.
An occupancy evaluation revealed that Shape employees valued the collaborative and efficient use of space in their existing work environment, which encouraged open communication and interaction between research teams through proximity and shared equipment. But it also revealed that not all spaces were created equal. Some had access to windows and daylight while others felt dark and closed in. And overall, there were not enough meeting rooms and huddle rooms to take calls or private conversations away from the open office, which could get noisy and disruptive.
ZGF used these insights to develop a design that enhances what Shape employees love—collaboration and connection—but also provides flexibility and choice to support focus and privacy. The open office and labs bring people and science together, while the variety of conference rooms allow teams to choose the right space to do their best work. Abundant daylight and city views serve as the backdrop for Shape’s groundbreaking research, with Lake Union to the east, Puget Sound to the west, and the iconic Space Needle in between.
BRIGHT + BOLD BRANDING
Shape’s innovative culture and brand identity come to life in the interior design using vibrant colors, layered textures and patterns, and refined furniture and finishes.
Ombre wall coverings draw employees in through the elevator lobby and into break areas.
Dynamic ceiling baffles infuse the company’s bold shade of blue while providing acoustic dampening in common areas.
Each level features a primary and secondary colorway anchored by “Shape Blue,” which appears on every level. The primary accent colors—green, yellow, red, and magenta—feature prominently in the lab benches, shelving, workstations, and ancillary furniture to visually connect the two programs.
ZGF and Objekts collaborated on the workplace furniture strategy, including height adjustable desks and mobile storage units for flexibility.
Tethered lab benches can plug and play with ceiling service panels as Shape’s science needs evolve. Raceway outlets along fixed walls allow for configurability of larger lab equipment.
A unique floating collaboration space fosters chance encounters outside of labs and office spaces.
